Riding a bicycle drunk is illegal, as 68 motorists get arrested in Estcourt this weekend and a total of 120 were arrested during the execution of #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation: Duma reflects on the past weekend as we start a new week

Public and Media Statement by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma_

20 April 2026

Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: We have observed a mixed reaction after the Department posted a photo of a cyclist undergoing a breathalyzer test during the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation in Estcourt yesterday.

Our highly efficient and dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate was guided by the National Road Traffic Act when they breathalyzed the cyclist.

Like motorists, cyclists can be breathalyzed by RTI on public roads and can also be arrested if they are found cycling under the influence of alcohol.

This past weekend alone, RTI arrested more than 120 motorists for drunk driving.

Figures from #NenzaniLaEzweni Operations executed in various places this weekend are as follows:-

● Estcourt – 68
● Empangeni – 8
● Kokstad – 43

Those arrested will be appearing in court today and they include the following:

● Taxi Drivers
● Bodyguard of a Mayor
● Metro Police from Gauteng
● Truck Drivers
● IT Specialist
● Eskom Technician
● Nurses
● Teachers
● House Husband
● Pensioner

A total of 5689 motorists have been arrested since 15 August 2025.

They were removed from our road networks before they could kill innocent people and in the process create orphans and widows.
